Nashbar Hounder Single-Speed Road Bike - 61cm Reviews
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful Good bang for the buck!, September 18, 2011 By This review is from: Nashbar Hounder Single-Speed Road Bike (Misc.) If you are looking for a good starter fixie/single speed bike you will probably be happy with this one because of the price point.
PROs: 1. price point
2. blank slate; get it in black, take off the stickers, make it your OWN
3. good quality frame (no I didn't say HIGH quality and no it's not super light but it's not bad)
CONs: 1. crank: low end in that it probably won't tolerate abuse if you like to ride hard
2. brake levers: low end in that the parts are plastic but you get what you pay for right?
3. tires: low end in that you will be either sliming the tubes or lining the tires or replacing them at some point
Could you go online or to a local bike shop and get a really "cool" looking fixie? Sure you could. For this price? NO!
My main goal: not too flashy of a bike because fixies ARE popular and seem to get stolen as much as a high end road bike.
My END goal: upgrade to deep Vs; change out to bullhorn bars; add... Read more
GREAT FOR ITS PRICE!, April 22, 2012 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Nashbar Hounder Single-Speed Road Bike (Misc.) I bought this bike because my first fixie "Takara kabuto" single speed road bike got stolen. The kabuto was heavier and costed 320$. This bike is lighter and is much better than my old one. And in other reviews they said that the parts are lower end but they are not! The parts are very sturdy and durable, I particularly use mine for tricking, I had to chops the bars a little so I could do barspins and footplant tailwhips but overall this product is great!
once updated, on par with low-end bike shop products, February 13, 2012 By This review is from: Nashbar Hounder Single-Speed Road Bike (Misc.) Frame is generic. Wheels are fine. Components are the lowest grade, perfectly usable in general, but rarely seen these days outside of discount stores. Seatpost, stem and handlebar are steel - heavy, but usable and easily upgradeable. Brakes are alloy, but old-style single pivot calipers with SURFACE mount. You will not be able to find modern double-pivot brake with a surface mount, and the frame (brake bridge and fork) drilled for surface brake mount will not accept modern recessed mount. This is not a tragedy - single-pivots work, but they require more force and are harder to adjust. I'd replace with high-end vintage surface mount brakes, also single-pivots, but better. Crank is a kiddy-store bmx in looks, but it works. Pedals supplied *required* bearing adjustment to be of any use - not some mild crunchiness, but major jamming...
Importantly - bike is supplied with the threadless stem/handlebar combo detached. This means that you'll be attaching the stem yourself, which... Read more
